Tell us about your role.
I have a dual role within the firm. First of all, I’m a senior
manager in Assurance. My responsibilities in this regard are fairly
self explanatory. I carry out audits and manage my own portfolio of
clients.
I also lead the UK International Business Centre. Our
International Business Centres are led by experts in international
business, who can connect clients to the wealth of expertise held
by colleagues around the world. As director of the UK branch, I act
as a gateway to the resources of our global organisation to ensure
we deliver distinctive client services across borders.
How has your career developed so far?
Travel has been a constant in my career. At first, I spent time
travelling the UK, working in places like Cannock, Bridgend,
Littlehampton and Abingdon. This was followed by a secondment to
Paris, which lasted just over three years. That was a fantastic
experience. I got to live in the centre of the city and work with
some excellent people, who fully embrace the same values and
ambitions as us. My son was also born out there, so it’s a time I
shall never forget.
What’s been your best experience?
Getting positive feedback from a client is always rewarding. A
recent example was when the chairman of a high-profile client said,
"The whole audit experience has been a significant improvement
compared to that with our previous audit firm.”
I was also very fortunate to take part in the Advanced Manager
Programme, which brought together around 50 senior managers from
around the world over three intensive sessions in Chicago, Brussels
and Hong Kong. Great fun, great people – and as a result, I’m
genuinely excited about the direction in which our global
organisation is going.
What makes Grant Thornton a special place to
work?
In my view, it’s the people and the opportunities. The
dedication of my colleagues never ceases to impress me. We may come
from different backgrounds, but all of us are driven by a culture
of excellence. Everyone is totally committed to delivering the best
service possible. The opportunities here are also exceptional. I
recently attended the annual Grant Thornton International
conference in Shanghai. This would have never seemed possible 12
months ago. Yet there I was, talking to leaders from all over the
world about the latest developments in our industry and about our
global strategy. Life here is never predictable.
Tell us something surprising about the
firm.
The level of support I’ve received has really surprised me. From
day one, I had access to managers, partners and leaders. Not only
are these people approachable, they haven’t forgotten what it was
like to be a trainee.
