Your career

Will I have opportunities to work abroad?
Many of our clients are international, so there could be opportunities to work abroad during your time with the firm. The length of the trips does vary – sometimes for a day meeting, or sometimes for a project that lasts several months. If you are interested in working and living abroad, there are opportunities to do secondments with member firms of the Grant Thornton International network in 120 countries, including Australia, USA, France and Greece.

What opportunities for personal development and training do you offer?

As part of your induction we encourage staff to put together a personal development plan with their line manager. This is tailored to your individual needs. There are many options for you, including support to gain additional qualifications, an e-training portal, opportunities to grow your technical, management and business skills – either on the job or on a more structured training programme at our dedicated residential training centre. You should receive an annual appraisal with your line manager, which gives you useful feedback and helps you make the most of the various training and development options on offer.

Our culture and our structure mean you can make your mark and progress to senior positions quickly. You'll have opportunities to work on secondment with specialist teams to broaden your skills and experience, stretching yourself as far as you'd like to go. If you have the potential and appetite for accelerated development, you will be given help and support at our development centres to uncover and develop skills that could take you to the highest positions in the firm.

How will you track my progress?
The key tool used to track how people are doing is our annual appraisal. Your performance will be measured against your individual business and personal objectives. There is the opportunity to have an interim appraisal to refresh your objectives and get further feedback.

We encourage an open culture whereby people give each other feedback as and when they work with each other. Other tools that can support you in understanding how well you are doing include client feedback surveys and 360 degree feedback. You can also use reporting tools such as our timesheet database, which allows you to keep track of your hours and what you have been working on.

Have I got to travel to develop my career?
Depending on the nature of your job, you may need to work at client sites from time to time. However, with offices all over the UK we're usually located close to our clients, so working away from home can be managed according to your needs. We would recommend that you ask this question in your interview as some roles require no travel whereas others require more.
