Grant Thornton supports 8 Task Challenge 2010

Grant Thornton has supported the action packed 8 Task Challenge, an event which pitted the physical and mental skills of university teams against one another to win a cash prize.

260 students forming 65 teams from universities across the UK took part in the challenge, which interspersed five mental tasks at checkpoints around the course with three physical tasks, canoeing, cycling and running/walking. The mental tasks provided a fun insight into the type of exercises that businesses often use to assess students for graduate jobs.

Maria Floud, Graduate Recruitment Manager at Grant Thornton says, "Taking on extra responsibility at university is key in developing strong communication, leadership and teamwork skills; exactly the abilities that employers are looking for in their future graduate recruits. The 8 Task Challenge is about being physically and mentally active and it helps students build their CVs."

A combined team of students from Oxford University and the University of London won the Overall Challenge Prize, scooping £1500 for their team and the same amount again for their university societies. Cambridge University won the Top University prize, taking home £1000 for the university Student Union. £1500 was also raised for Grant Thornton's chosen charity, the Alzheimer's Society.

During the challenge, points were awarded for each of the checkpoint tasks the teams completed and for the amount of time it took them to complete the course. Emphasis was placed on the team's ability to complete each task successfully rather than just their outright speed.
